The island previously had around 58 benches made of teak and 53 of jatoba wood, also known as Brazilian cherry, but the expected cost of their refurbishment was expensive — close to $700,000. City staff suggested a plan that would have brought the cost down to about $148,000, but the Newport Beach City Council voted down the possibility in January 2020 in favor of replacing the benches with new ones made of faux wood. Nine of Balboa Island‘s teak sidewalk benches, phased out and replaced beginning in 2020, are up for auction as of Wednesday. Also in attendance on Saturday were Irvine Ranch Conservancy and Environmental Nature Center representatives, on hand to describe the facilities they offer for the exploration of native habitats.

A member of various garden clubs, Lam has turned his home garden into a bit of a jungle in the past nine years. He’s particularly fond of Maxillaria tenuifolias, commonly called coconut orchids for the unmistakable aroma they emit. Whereas conventional wisdom suggests orchids be watered in the morning, Phillips noticed rain typically arrives in the late afternoon, dousing orchids enough to tide them over until the following day.

Those who grew up in LA will highly appreciate the LAUSD-esque coffee cake. Right in the middle of Thai Town is the Black- and Filipino-owned coffee shop Obet & Del’s. Owner Gacia Tachejian starts with ethically sourced beans, roasts them in-house, and develops one tasty maple oat latte at both locations. This longtime cafe now has three locations throughout Southern California. Whether visiting 10 Speed in Santa Monica or Sawtelle, the coffee is strong and well made, while the space is a solid place to hang out for the day, especially the cozy Calabasas location.
We roast our beans at our downtown location and serve them at our (currently) three shops and you can find them at other shops around the city too. Eventually, we hope to host coffee classes in our shops some time in the future.

The teak benches were first approved by the Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission in January 1996 at the behest of the Balboa Island Improvement Assn. on the condition that they be maintained by the group. The city took over their maintenance in 2006, when it had an in-house wood shop and refurbishing the benches cost $400. That work was outsourced in 2012, and market changes pushed the costs up to $960 for a jatoba bench and $1,150 for a teak bench at the time the council reconsidered and ultimately shut down the project in 2020. Lauren Jue, also on the park committee, grew up in the community and moved back when her children were young. “All the meetings are outside in the park.” She explained that the neighborhood has a mix of ages and the park committee works hard to serve all of them.
